About Chuck Dykes
A Bit of Background
I have over 20 years of experience in business development, marketing and strategy leadership in both giant corporations and small companies. I have worked in high tech software & data comm (giants), low tech manufacturing & distribution (my own small startup) and functional strategy & business process consulting (mid-sized). In recent years I have found a passion for new media (again, my own startups). I have always enjoyed ‘why and how’ companies make money and the strategy of direction to accomplish it. I have had great accomplishments as well as disasters which allow me to enjoy a tenured and unique perspective with battle scars to prove it. My greatest passion is ‘creation’, which is why I thoroughly love getting involved in new businesses and projects.
Fundamental Change
At points during our civilization timeline transformational junctures occur, markers that signal fundamental change. I believe we are living during one such event and that is exciting. Dan Pink, in is book ‘A Whole New Mind’ calls it the shift from the Informational Age to the Conceptual Age. (If you have not, read this book). Pink references three prevailing trends pointing towards the future of business and the economy:
- Abundance (consumers have too many choices, nothing is scarce)
- Asia (everything that can be outsourced, is)
- Automation (computerization, robots, technology, processes)
He believs that creativity becomes the key competitive difference for companies to flourish:
- Design - Moving beyond function to engage the sense.
- Story - Narrative added to products and services - not just argument. Best of the six senses.
- Symphony - Adding invention and big picture thinking (not just detail focus).
- Empathy - Going beyond logic and engaging emotion and intuition.
- Play - Bringing humor and light-heartedness to business and products.
- Meaning - Immaterial feelings and values of products.
The shift permanently changes the way companies must communicate with the world if they want to remain relevant in the equation. And in my opinion, for the better of us all.
Our Blog
This blog gives us a place to explore and discuss all things new media and what I believe is a convergence of marketing, social media and PR. No matter what we call it, we still have to communicate with each other to be effective.
